As there on an edible crop it's harder to treat, you could try just crushing the bugs with you fingers or spraying off with a hose also soapy water works well if that doesen't work you could always try a bug killer thats safe to use on veg

Yup, that's probably right. Plant broad beans in the autumn so they get ahead well before the black fly get here, and pinch their tops out (that's the bit the blackfly like and [guessing] what allows/causes them to multiply.

Would soapy water do the trick?

I just spent the last hour doing mine with soapy water in a hand spray. It had better work!!!! :D

Whilst I was turning the leaves to make the blackfly more accessible to the spray I noticed that some of the leaves had bunches oftiny bright yellow eggs on them. Each egg was no bigger than half a millimetre.

    Any idea what they are?

Min if you can give the beans a good blast with a hosepipe then that often will get rid of them after they have drowned.I also find torrential rain has the same effect though for the last two years I havn't had the problem with them on my beans:thumb:

Shiney, sounds like they are the eggs of the Cabbage White Butterfly so you need to get back outside and squish them before they have a chance to hatch and nosh the plants:)

have just spent the last 20 minutes spraying with soapy water, luckily i could only see the black fly on 3 extended bits on one plant, so i have sprayed all around the area and got hubby to rip out the broad bean plant.

only reason i had the broad bean, is that my daughter brought it home from nursery and noone told us what it was.

hope this does the trick, ive also sprayed all the leaves with just plain water, this extreme heat that we have had today in sussex had made the leaves go all crispy :(

Thanks Kandy, I don't do squishing  :D but I did spray them with soapy water.

It may not kill them but at least they will be nice and clean :thumb: :)

Have a question about commercial/chemical aphid control sprays: Do they inhibit pollination? Ie by killing or repelling the bugs that would (absent spray) pollinate the plants?
