While on a day trip to nearby Holland yesterday, we saw these black Fresian horses.

I don't know what the one in the middle had, he looked so sad and ill, sway-backed and showed no interest as did the other two. He also had something white on his face - no idea what it could have been as he was too far off to see it properly.

The one on the left in the above photo came over and let me pet him. Unfortunately, I had no apples or carrots to give him. I got lots of photos of him but every time I backed up a bit to try and get a good pic, he came nearer and so on lots of photos I had "cut" either his ears or nose off. Here are the best of the lot - one with chopped ears.

[IMG] Beautiful photos Kedi, but isn't it heart-rending to see these horses put out for the winter who seem to be neglected. :( There use to be a field near us where they over wintered horses that worked in the summer. Seemed they were forgotten almost until it was time for them to work again, with not much food put out they really seemed to suffer in the wet. No food after they had trampled the ground! Hope your ill looking one will be OK.. ;)

    I hope so too, Marley.

The young ones seemed healthy enough and there was electric wiring around the field, so someone was caring - I hope! I wondered if the poor old one was spending his last months or years here (Gnadenbrot) and had the other two as company.

Kedi, lovely photos of the Fresians but there doesn't seem to be enough grazing for any of them.

I can see why they have put up electric tape because looking at the grass on the other side of the fence if I was those horses I would be in there noshing on all that lovely grass.

Did they have any shelter in that field? They need suplimentory feeding over the winter months and somewhere where they can go and shelter from bad weather..

The headcollar on one of those horses seems to be making an impression in it's nose and looks like it needed to be loosened.

They don't look like they are wearing shoes so obviously they don't go out onto hard ground that often as they would need to be re shod on a regular bases if they did

I hope that whoever owns them does look after them all, though looking at the stae of the paddock it makes me wonder. If it was me I would be losing sleep worrying about all of them :(

Thankyou for sharing them with us..

The illlooking one is on its way out, Having worked on farms, that gaunt haggerd look is a sure sign of death. Possibly pneumonia or similar.

Hope they are being looked after properly, they do seem to have eaten or trodden most of the field. The sad one should have a shelter. :(

Oh dear, now I am worrying too! I should have looked properly how everything was. We both assumed that they lived at the farm right next to the field and had their stall there. I can't remember seeing a shelter in the field, but that might have been as I was too interested in the one that came up to the fence.

I thought all horses were shod, but now looking at the pics, Kandy, I can't see any sign of shoes either.

Yes, the field does look very bare.

At least I can say that I did make a note of watching the poor one if he was sneezing, coughing or having a problem breathing. I read an article about that some years ago, about the time one of the ponies across the road from us had a bad cough. So I can report that the poor thing just stood there and did nothing.

I don't think I've ever heard of these horses being used as work animals, but you obviously have an eye for such Pro Gard.

This is the same farm where we saw black Fresians in June 2001 when my Dad was visiting us and we went this way over to Holland for the day too.

I think the halter was only crooked, Kandy, it didn't seem tight to me and I would have noticed that since I kept petting his head. If you look at the 4th pic, you can see that it is loose enough under his head. But the 3rd pic does look like you said!

Now this is something else to think and worry about.

Kedi the band under the chin does look looser, but to me the top nose band does look like it is leaving an impression.the top band just needed loosening off a bit.

There is nothing any of us can do aboutthe situation,so there is no point in any of us worrying about it.It is just one of those things. It is hardly as sickening as those poor horses that were rescued in Bedfordshire last week. Now their treatment really did make my blood boil

Yes, I read the articles and was thinking about them while I was writing the above. That guy should be run over with his 4X4 and then left to rot.

I can't understand how people can be so cruel, and I doubt that anyone here can either.
