I bought it this year in August do they normally lose all of their foliage around this time? It has lost everything and just has very small buds left on it but looks bad.

Yes, they do drop their leaves at this time of year Anth, it's quite normal.

If you want to make sure it's still alive, try scraping away a tiny sliver of bark on one of the branches with your fingernail. If the wood underneath shows green the plant is alive and well.

If the wood under the bark is brown and the branch is brittle and snaps easily, it could be dead.

No I didn't just planted into a larger container it never really grew well or showed much sign of any growth from the time it was bought.

All though last moth it lost a lot of leaves so decided to remove it from the pot and plant it into the garden. Now all the leaves have gone which made me think is it dead or not?

The only thing that's left on it is some berries. In the morning I will scrape it.

I wouldn't worry , it probably never grew anymore because it was late in the year August, just so you know they hate a windy spot , so a ideal spot is sunny but sheltered

I've had one for two years and am about to give up on it and dig it out. Like Acers they don't like windy areas and hate my coastal position sadly.

I would normally agree Zigs but Sambucus tend to have more delicate branches than other plants. In the recent winds here most of mine have been snapped off, so it's time to give up and try something else in that spot.

I'll be interested to hear the outcome of this one, I have one too and it is not about 4 foot tall. All growth has stopped but the leaves are still there and it looks fantastic, if a little lanky and juvenile. Looking forward to next year when it bushes out a bit more.

While I am on I have dahlia and geranium in the greenhouse do these stay as they are or do they need to be cut to the soil? Its my first winter as I have only started taking up gardening this year so unsure what to do with them so they flower next year I have taking some cutting of the geranium hoping they root.

Sambucus look alive to me I would bark the soil over helps protect the roots in the first year plus stops the weeds.
with the dahlia turn the pot on its side and let it dry out , once all dry shake the soil off trim down the stems , turn upside down so any moisture in the stems will come out for a couple of days then store in dry compost some where cool and dark and NO frost .
With the geranium and to me it looks like Mrs Pollock , dont over water and you have to keep frost free otherwise they will die, green house is ok but if the temperate drops so that plants water gets frozen bring onto the windowsill in the kitchen

What sort of temperatures kill these plants. I am guessing that 1 or 2 frosty nights won't kill these but more prolonged frost for days on end?

Aswell as a greenhouse I do have an old coal house that is part of the house temperatures in there should be above freezing. Maybe I could put them in there if they don't need any light?
