Here's another extract from an article in the Amateur Gardening Magazine about the announced Royal Mail cost in sending stuff.

"The cost of buying plants and garden products by mail order looks set to soar after Royal Mail announced huge rises in the price of postage.

As the cost of a first class stamp rises this month from 46p to 50p, businesses are being slapped with inflation busting hikes in the cost of posting catalogues and plants to customers.

Paul Hansord, Managing Director of Thompson & Morgan Young Plants said the price rises were "very disappointing. I expect there will have to be rises in the cost of deliveries to cover the massive increase that Royal Mail has just given to us" Paul said. "No other businesses could get away with issuing such big prices rises at such short notice. We are paying for their [Royal Mail's] inefficiencies. We cannot adapt our business model for this. The cost of sending catalogues will go up" he said.

Small Nurseries, already facing soaring oil and gas prices for heating Green Houses, and record diesel prices for transporting plants to flower shows, will be hit the hardest. At Streptocarpus and House Plant specialist Dibleys Nurseries in North Wales, Mail Order Manager Paul Johnson described the impact of the Royal Mail's price increases as "quite a shock. We send out thousands of parcels via the Royal Mail, not to mention our Plant Catalogues" Paul said. "There is talk of double digit prices increases for postage - possibly as much as 20 to 30 per cent. There is a limit to what customers will pay for postage, so as a business we will have to cut our costs and become more efficient. We are definitely about to be hit with large increases" he warned.

At Devon based Orchid Specialist Burnham Nurseries, Sara Rittershausen, said the Nursery's contract with Parcel Force would protect against price rises until September. But Sarah said delivery charges would go up in Autumn to cover the Nursery's postage costs if they rise. Expert Orchid Grower Sarah told AG "at the moment, the cost of everything is going up, and every increase affects small businesses."

Well maybe some of them will take notice of my previous moans on here about charging me a couple of quid postage for a few packets of seed, only to send me 2 thumping great catalogues that I didn't ask for that arrive before the seeds do.

Oi, Chiltern Seeds, wake up and smell the coffee. I didn't want your Catalogue, I didn't want to pay postage for my seeds if you were going to send me a catalogue. I found the online catalogue, I didn't need a hard copy.

Maybe some of those names mentioned in the article will learn to only send me one copy of each catalogue instead of two or three identical copies. If they dedupe their mailing lists, reduce mailouts to lapsed customers, and use email where the customer has asked for email rather than paper mail, then they will easily save themselves, and therefore their customers, from the postage prices rise.

In my case I find that Thompson & Morgan are the biggest culprits. I haven't bought from them in at least two years and yet I still get multiple deliveries of their catalogues:dunno:

I'll see if they can get a move on with it, Sheal:snork: You'll need an emergency stock in case you get bad weather again, and it'll be something to read while you're in the smallest room in the house.:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

BP in 2010 lost around $40 bn of petrol and another $7.8 Bn in compensation.......since December 2010 there has been a rise of about 40/5 pence more per lt , That will affect every business , that including killing business who where living on mail order and chep import but at the same time will boost local business.......price of plant in my local nursery it`s almost doubled since last year...but at the same time plants on ebay are cheap but with the postal order will be even more expencive.
I was thinking of buy a messenger pigeon , so that we could swap seeds for free ......but then realise that the pigeon will eat the seeds :snork:

Maybe van Meuwen will actually put multiple plants in a single box now ... it really T's me off that they send each individual plant I order in a separate box all the way from Holland, and each box has a mini-catalogue (the same one for all the packages I buy ... so it just gets binned) and the same junk mail. I already have a Mantis thank you very much, 15 identical special offers is no use to me ...

Yeah, the seed companies need to prune their mailing lists and also the number of issues of the same magazine they send out per annum. One would do, with updates/ sales info etc. available on line.

As ziggy said , if you order on line there is a fair to middling chance you have browsed the web catalogue. The glossy one ( you receive with each order ) is never used.............it goes straight in the blue bin. I am sure they will wise up a bit now . Its the glossy printers who will be worried !
