Having moved into a flat with a bit of a weed garden out the back I am hoping to plant some grass next spring/summer.

In the meantime I was going to buy something to cover the garden over the winter to kill off all the weeds, my question is what is better - something thick and non-porous (eg: some black polythene plastic), or some actual 'weed control fabric' that they sell in places like homebase?

I understand the weed control fabric lets water and air in, which is what you want if it's in a bed where you have other plants you want to grow. However, for my purpose (killing everything) I think I'd be better off with just some heavy sheeting?

I guess the problem is if it rains heavily it'll get puddl-y with plastic...

The area is about 5m x 6m or so.

    Thanks,

    Chris

If it's to kill off weeds over winter then plastic sheet would be the cheapest answer. Some deep rooted weeds like dandelions would still survive and pop up next year, so really your best bet is to dig it over and get them out, then put down the sheeting.

Thanks, I thought so. I spent the latter part of the summer spraying with roundup/de-weeding and then subsequently digging most of it over but never actually getting round to planting any grass or sorting the soil out properly.

A few small leafy things starting to sprout up now so may do as you say before getting the sheeting.

First decent rain we've had in a while today so at least it might be a bit easier to dig over!

      Cheers
