Doubt we will see this on sale here, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to import GM foods and animals into the EU :what:

This was previously being called a 'purple tomato' and it's been around for some time - I think the research started at Oregon State University around 2,000 but hasn't previously been generally available as seed.

Just been over to Tomatoville (I like tomatoes) and found this link:

Now non-GM purple tomatoes to beat cancer

The seed producers may have re-branded this (purple) tomato as black to make it sound more natural.

Good morning,I'm new to the forum. I went right to the veg area and saw the Israel blue tomato post. Yes it looks like an OSU blue,I have grown them out for 2 seasons now. Didn't care much for the taste first time around, second season growing them I learnt to leave them a little longer on the vine till the colour deepened and the shoulders were deep red and the bottom half was really deep purple ,much better.

have you tried growing them from seed (from the original tomatoes that you grew?)

Oh ... that's ok then .... am still trying to get my head around all this genetically modified stuff

as far as I understood, seeds from the crops are sterile, and will not grow .... you have to keep on ordering new seed every year

              but I may be wrong

osu blue is just a tomato cross,I don't know its parentage but I expect it would be in the black tomato family, its not engineered just some mixed up pollen. If you search the Oregon state university plant files I'm sure the parentage will be listed as this is where the tomato was crossed. You are right GMOs are sterile .

About fifteen years ago I grew one tomato plant on the kitchen windowsill
It was fine (Alicante) the fruits were full size and shiney red,
Mmmn time to eat, cut one open and the flesh was black, it smelt fine, and the taste to the tongue was really tomato taste, but I dare not eat them
                So burnt them all

Maybe by accident I had created a new variety who knows I will now never achieve fame

Oh. That's convenient then - for the seed company.

I bought plants of something called Black Cherry last year. They grew and yielded quite well and were delicious. They were not as dark as the poisonous-looking berries in the photo but still a very deep black-flushed red. I notice seed of these on sale this year and would certainly be happy to grow them again.
