We have an elder tree at the back of our garden (odd shaped thing, but its never done me any harm, so it gets left alone) and it is literally heaving with blackfly; apart from spraying with a systemic bug killer, is there anything else I can do or should I ignore and leave alone?

If the bugs aren't controlled they will do a lot of damage sapping the leaves, the leaves will then shrivel up and drop. I sprayed diluted washing up liquid in water on a Spiraea last year that did the trick. :)
