I seem to have a slight infestation of blackfly on the seed trays around my propagator :( Now normally I would just give them a blast with my bug spray - but at the moment I have some very very delicate seedlings on the go . Would it be safe to give a careful light spray

    TIA

Oh that is a shame Harry, I'd be tempted to try a dilute soap solution first rather than any thing stronger. I haven't tried it myself on seedlings, but later in the season I use it to keep blackfly at bay on my runner beans. So for my mature plants I use Stergene which is pure liquid soap, mix up 1 teaspoonful of Stergene in 1 pint of water, volumes are not critical and use it twice a week, I should think it would be OK to try on seedlings too.

I've got problems with aphids on my emerging Chives this year, don't think the frost was long enough to take care of them.

In the propagator is it black fly or fungus gnats from the compost?

Now you mention it LD...... I thought they were Black Fly , but now looking at pics on Google images , they may be Fungus Gnats  very small 2mm long black mosquito like .
What is the best treatment for this ? What damage can they do ?

I have used a piece of potato skin on top of the soil they are attracted to the damp area ans then disposed of.
        You could try Bayer Garden
The main problem is not the flies but the maggots they eat the roots and rotting humus and breed.
