My white one started into growth quite well, as did my pink/white one.
In the last two weeks, the white one is starting to die back, something they don't normally do until at least September.
I am not sure if it is something to do with the sort of year we are having.
Too much wet and cold.My other ones are doing fine.

If you have got it in the ground, it might not like the conditions, mine are in semi shade, or it is just the type of season.

Try feeding it with Tomato fertiliser like Tomorite, to give it some nutrients.

It might be in shock from the conditions it was in before you bought it, and is trying to cope with your garden.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that Kandy. I'll try the fertiliser you suggested. It got battered by the rain a couple of weeks ago, then the flowers started looking a bit strained and now nothing!

They look so nice in the garden, fingers crossed the fertiliser will help.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I got mine last year and they died back early after flowering but this year they are brill twice the size and flowering well. so i think they must take a bit to settle in.

Mine are spectacular at the moment, just bleeding over the lawn and in quite a rough patch under the crab apple tree.

They always come back and I do very little maintanance, I am sure they will be OK, just gone to bed for the season.

Mine were spectacular last year and flowered for 11 weeks, this year they have done 5 weeks and are rubbish. They got badly hit by wind and rain. I suspect that you have good years and bad years for plants, according to conditions. I have read that you can quite often get more flowers, but for a shorter time, if you deadhead them. I have never tried it, but I will this year.

However Pea, I think if you bought yours in flower, you often do not get a good show the first year, but will do next year. I think it was Monty Don last Friday talking about Poppies, and he said don't buy one with a flower stalk, it won't do as well [in the first year] as one without. It does take some plants two or three years to really get established.

How old are yours Waco. My book (Richard Bird) says that they are not long lived and may need to be replaced after five years.

In my garden in Cambs I had a big clump of red and white bleeding hearts, and another all white variety with lime green foliage, When I left they had been there 10 years. I suppose they could have selfseeded?

Mine was trampled over by builders last year doing my patio and it totally disappeared. Couldnt believe it this year when it grew from root to almost twice the size of last year.

It is also dying back now - a lot of the leaves have gone yellow but there is still small fresh growth too.

Should I cut it back to root when it dies or leave it? What I couldnt believe was my gran has one in her garden which is enormous - its like a large bush....didnt think they grew that big

Mine were big too! Lovely. The leaves don't usually die back after flowering. I don't know what's happening here.

My red and white one is giving up the ghost for this year, just like the white ones.
It has to be the weather as they are usually fantastic right through to the autumn, unless they are dying for good.We have had them for 5 years and this is the worst year ever.

Just been reading Beth Chatto, who says that the white version of Dicentra Spectabilis flowers quite a bit longer than the white and pink. Having said that the white and pink is so pretty. The shorter Dicentra Formosa also flowers for a lot longer - all summer I have heard. But I don't have one.

Only if you dead head it! It isn't nearly as spectacular- I'd call it a pretty little plant. I've got one, it's pale pink.

I have Dicentra Formosa, which I never dead head and it looks a picture all through the summer, though not quite as good as the other two.

I find it is also easy to propagate, so now have quite a few dotted around the garden.
