No real solution i'm afraid, your hands will toughen up the more you do, just takes time.

Welcome to Gardeners Corner btw :sign0016:

Don't wear gloves. they cause blisters. You can 'harden up' your hands by dropping a little methylated spirits on them and carry out 'washing motions'. Best thing is to cease work before the blisters appear.

      Cheers, Tony.

Zinc oxide strip. Or stop digging. Or more digging but in shorter spurts.

Get someone else to do the job :heehee: !!

It is a damn nuisance, I tend to work in short bursts, otherwise the damage is done.

i know most bodybuilders don't bother with gloves when lifting weights as after a period of time their hands will naturally toughen up & become calloused enough to no longer need any protection....would it not be the same for gardeners :dunno:

Yes I find gloves only usefull for dirty jobs like fence/shed painting. They will give you blisters as said above and your hands do sweat with them. Cotton gloves may be ok ..don't know but there is a pack of em somewhere in one on of my sheds ..not sure where..sound familiar..

I like the cotton jersey gloves with the rough rubber palms. Cool and comfy to wear but give a lot of protection.
I only get blisters from secateur use, and then only if I'm really going at, say, a massive pyracantha for several hours.

[IMG]This is the sort of thing I mean - quite cheap from Wilko or elsewhere, and the two main finger and thumbs don't wear through too quickly, and provide some waterproofing. Also brightly coloured so I don't lose them.
Padded cotton gloves are either too stiff or too flimsy.

As a x professional tennis player Kleftiwallah's advice is spot on. Methylated spirits does indeed work, I often use it at the beginning of the gardening season when my hands aren't as hardened as they are now at the end of the season. For many years I used to have to soak my feet in the spirit to try and stop blisters. Doesn't smell that good but does work!
