    I bought 2 bokashi bins 2 years ago, and dutifully scraped my kitchen waste into one until it was full, then started on the other. 6 months later they were both still full of partially digested stuff, very little liquid fertiliser to drain off, and the bran was going mouldy. Put the whole lot on the compost heap. Maybe it just wasn't warm enough, or I didn't use enough bran, but I thought they were a waste of money. I would rather have my daleks full of worms.

    If it works by fermenting the waste, can we not just add a sachet of home brewers yeast?

    I was actually thinking to do a thread about the kitchen waste , as I don`t have space I only recycling kitchen waste in winter , now that the bananas and canna have been moved in I keep throwing my waist in the holes to enrich the soil ready for next year , but recently big rats have been seen around my area i was warryed that they are eating my broccoli and cabbage .

    Admin note : Waste = Refuse, stuff for composting

    Waist = Tummy area on a human

    Waiste = Not a real word as far as I know.

        Yeah, cool, you could probably drain off pure, home-produced marmite as an additional benefit.

          I have a problem with my waist too!

          We put vegetable scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds on the compost heap (Dalek)

          Meat and cooked vegetable waste (some goes in the compost bin, such as uneaten salad leaves, generally not if cooked though) goes in the dustbin.

          I've thought about getting a "green cone" (think that's the name) for those. Half buried in the ground, with a sealed lid, so vermin can't get at it, and composts anaerobically [I presume]

            You could plant Comfrey around the base of the cone to mop up much of the nutrients that would otherwise escape into the soil deeper than the normal root zone.
