I've had great success with my Bomarea hirtella this year and it has encouraged me to try my hand at a few more. I'm totally smitten with this climbing Alstromeria relative, so here's another photo of it!

The last blooms are just about to open on it in the greenhouse, so it has a long blooming season. Mine is about 18 months old from seed. Charlie Pridham reckons they can be hardy in a sheltered spot in the south of England.

So I've decided to grow some more. I have just ordered seed for B.salsilla............

The seeds can be found here if you are interested.

Not all Bomarea are climbers. Bomarea boliviensis is a non climbing species that is proving difficult to track down................

Has anyone else grown Bomarea and got any tips?

Never tried them I'm afraid, I like the look of boliviensis.

            What happened?

There's serious room for improvement I'm afraid. Hopefully the tubers will have increased enough to split and experiment with.

Let me know if you track one down...........

Can't remember, it was ages ago, when I was keen on raising all these weird things from seed. Either it sprouted and died or just didn't bother with the sprouting. Or was that the mutisia?

I tried mutisia a few times some years ago.
Never had any luck in germination, but then I was using T&M seed back in those days

Blimey! I didn't think Mutisias looked like that - I was expecting a weedy climber with pink daisies on.

Some of them are - that one though is Mutisia linearifolia. I picked that one as I thought that it is rather stunning. It also looks to be potentially quite hardy. More info here.

Which one - Bomarea or Mutisia? I would imagine that both would grow well for you. The Bomarea would have the potential to be spectacular though!

The more that I read about it you did well to get that far!

The foliage was "undistinguished" to say the least. The flower would've had to be extremely good to make it worthwhile.
