Has anyone ever grown a bonsai horse chestnut, I have got half a dozen growing from conkers and just wondered if it's worth having a go at growing one as a bonsai???

I tried, but it was just too vigorous. Planted it out in the end, its now about 20 foot tall.

Got an Ash that ive had more sucess with, thats gotta be 10 years old now & still only 2 foot high.

Did have a Silver Birch & something else, but not checked to see if they survived the winter yet.

I find that tree's with naturally large leaves don't usually look pleasing as bonsai as the leaves rarely become much smaller and so the tree just produces less =/ although this blog has a couple of better examples Walter Pall Bonsai Adventures: ash and horse chestnut

saying that every-time I look at a bonsai I feel like I should be phoning the Plant RSPCA to report neglect :o

That should be the RSPCT :D I know what you mean, just can't find a decent place to plant the ash tree out yet. don't want to put it where its going to get killed, so in the meantime, its a bonsai.

Hows the Corpse Flower coming on ?

ziggy, I wouldn't plant an ash tree anywhere near your land if I were you. They grow very fast, plant their seeds everywhere and and are a b*gger to dig out after only a couple of years :rolleyespink:. This is the voice of experience talking :D.

I had a mature ash tree removed over 20 years ago (it was becoming dangerous - and an ASBO didn't help :heehee:) and we are still digging out seedlings and saplings now. At least 100 each year . Some that have planted themselves inside large shrubs and hedges are impossible to remove and we keep having to cut them to the ground. It doesn't seem to stop them :cry3:.
