    Hi Guys,

I bought this little bonsai tree from homebase a few weeks ago now (Dims idea). It still looks a bit standard at the moment but im sure after months of hard work, care and patience it will look a mess. So after its had its first repotting il put some more pics up to show you all how its coming along

It was labelled in the shop as a podocarpus. When i look in my bonsai book its says podocarpus is a chinese yew but when i google chinese yew it says Taxus celebica though, NOT podocarpus....so im not really sure what type of tree it is (i dont think it is a yew) Does anybody have any inclination as to what it may be??

    :ThankYou:
    Hydro.

Well you can prune year round & root cuttings in summer Hydro, you have to trim the leaves back like any tree or bush to keep it's shape, so why not select one branch out of the way a bit & have a trial prune.. This a brilliant article to help you & get you started.. http://www.columbusbonsai.org/trees?q=node/61

 Thanks Marley i have bookmarked that one :blue thumb:

Since ive got it, all i have done is put some garden ties on the lower stem to try to curve it round like the central trunk is. Im trying to memorise the shape of the plant before i start trimming, otherwise i will probably end up chopping of the wrong part and loose the shape haha. I dont think it has been cared for very well before i bought it, but it was only 16 pounds. From what ive read on the net though they all tend to be a bit ruff around the edges if you buy them from a store like homebase or a garden centre because the gardeners there dont have the time that is needed to dedicate to each individual plant.

I think i will take the plunge tomorrow and pick a branch, it looks like it could do with alot of the inner branchs removing but its really hard to tell that from the picture. Im going to try to have as much trunk showing as possible and just a few branchs

        :ThankYou:

It was 17 pounds for the tree and pot. Think it is supposed to be 6 years old though....
Some of the the pictures i have seen in this book are amazing one of them has shaped the trunk to look like a lion!! :dancy:

I got my feed today from amazon, funnily enough the postman knocked on with it as i was watering my bonsai lol...

Do you have any pics of yours Nick??????

Thank you Nick and hydrogen for creating a new and interesting thread. Must confess, I am not a fan of Bonsai but I do acknowledge the skill, patience and care that is needed to get it to "stay with you" for say, 40 years!!
Good luck and thanks for the piccies,

Your bonsai was well cheaper than mine Nick they well saw me coming!! :gaah: Today i chopped quite a few branchs off and aput some more wire around lower branchs to shape them. I did not have any proper bonsai wire tie though so i had to use some soldar metal instead,,,i just hope thats ok and it does not give it lead posion!!?? lol

Camelia sounds like a top idea Scotkat bet that would look great....pine trees look really cool too but i cant really find much info though about starting your own bonsai from seed...
