    Hello. Am sad today as the man behind me has cut down the mature trees at the back of his garden (including a lovely silver birch). Not only were they beautiful but they screened off the view into his garden and gave us some privacy (purely selfish reasons here!). I'm sure he had good reasons for getting rid of them, but can anyone recommend some quick growing trees that don't mind shady places? The spot is about 60ft from any houses but next to a shed on a concrete hard standing.

    Thank you.

    Hi kathy535,

    Shade-loving trees are not generally going to be quick growing as, by their nature, they don't make the most of natural sunlight. A few species you may want to think about would be:

    * Horse chestnut
    * Holm oak
    * Beech
    * Norway maple (copper coloured leaves)
    * Cedar
    * Algerian oak
    * Indian bean tree
    * Tulip tree
    * London plane
    * Luscombe oak

    Of course the trees will need to be properly maintained and looked after, and they will need plenty of watering if there is little soil in the area where they are to be planted (you mentioned a concrete hard standing).

    Hope this is of some help.
