Hi there and welcome - Garden Designer by Tim Newbury - is quite useful - but for me I found browsing small garden photographs at the garden centre the most useful for ideas.

There are so many garden books around and fashions come and go. (Does anyone still go in for decking and spray their fences purple?)

Who are your all time favourite garden writers?

    I can shortlist four:

Margery Fish is my number one. Her series of books are probably out of print now. She remains my main inspiration and I still garden in her style. She had a wonderful intimate style where every plant seems like a personal friend. She died in 1969, but her garden at East Lambrook near South Petherton in Somerset can still be visited.

Number two is Keble Martin who spent 60 years of his life drawing and painting the wild plants of Britain for his Concise British Flora.

Number three is David Bellamy who taught me something about botany and how plants work.

Number four is Chris Baines who converted me to gardening for wildlife.
