When I was sent some single white daturas I thought the flowers would be boring. Not a bit of it, they are huge, the edges are tinged with lilac, and they wait until dark befor opening.

    Oh you beauty!

Hey, Rich, why are you not talking about these beauties inthe current discussion ... sshhh ... they are now called Brugmansias - can't say this too loud as t'other half says "what, are you talking about Daturas!"? :D :D :D As you have white ones, should smell nice at night as well. [IMG] And don't be bitter about it!

These are not Brugs, these are daturas. There is a difference.

I'll see if I can find the other discussion.

    Yes, they do smell nice.

A Datura is the short-lived herbaceous shrub and often has double ruffled flowers. I had a lovely purple one frilled with white a few years ago, but it only lived for a couple of years. Daturas also have prickly round seed pods. Brugmansias are the larger shrub/tree variety and have pea-like seed pods. Perhaps yours is a Datura and, if so sorry, but your seed pods will tell you which you have! [IMG]

The general rule is that if the flowers grow up they are daturas if they hang down they are brugs.

I have 3 sorts of dats and 5 varieties of brug, but the brugs are all diseased.

Yes, Rich, my Datura blooms looked heavenward ... is this the devil looking toward the angels as per M-L's comment? [IMG]

Glad we agree on what's what but so many people think Brugs are Dats and dat's not right! I didn't realise you were so knowledgeable about them, but now I do!

Sorry to hear your Brugs are ill. :( Mine are both fine, just have to shoo a little whitefly away daily. I keep talking to my white one telling it to hurry up and bloom like its pink partner! [IMG] The pink one blooms all day long ... can't remember what the white one does, perhaps just in the evening.

I have made friends with people in America who have sent me brug and dat seeds, I feel so bad about what has happened to the brugs.

I'll send you some shoofly seeds if you like. I don't know if they work, I don't suffer from whitefly.

The shoofly plant is an annual which has blue and white flowers, it is supposed to ward off white fly, hence the name.

I'm pulling up seedlings all the time. If you want the standard one pictured above I can let you have some seeds or seedlings too.

Rich that datura looks like metaloides or innoxia, I used to have some of those, my seed came from a building site in Las Vegas.
Not got any now but I do remember the scent in the evenings and watching the flowers open, one even overwintered in the garden one year.
