First off, Macleaf, is it a standard bottle brush or a weeping one? I have a weeping one and I just cut back each branch to a new shoot immediately below the seedpods which form on the branches, which also encourages the new shoots to develop quicker.

I didn't mean standard "on a stick" but standard "regular" as opposed "weeping"! Is it one on a single stem she wants? If so, then strip the lower branches off to the desired height on the sturdiest, most upright stem and then do as suggested above ... cutting back to a new set of leaves behind the seedpods.
