Yes you can just sow as per normal instructions. I see you also have a smoke bush? too, me too. If your seedlings fail let me know as I have a healthy Bottle brush and can grow you some cuttings and when established post you some.

I'd put my money on it being an Acer ... but a bit hard to tell from the picture. I reckon it looks a bit straggly for a Cotinus, but if it is then I think hard pruning in the Winter would give lovely strong fresh stems next year

Sprinkle the seeds over compost and they'll shoot up pretty quick. I did it a year or so ago and they're dead easy. Bit slow to get really going though after planting up.

Strongy is our resident bottle brush ID expert, but to me it looks like Callistemon rigidus, its quite readily available I think and probably one of the hardiest.
Even so, some of the frosts the last few years will kill them. I think mine has just about pulled through.

Seedlings are very slow at first, but start to move after a couple of months, could be three years or more before flowers though.

It is the common Callistemon Linearis/Rigidus.
Jools, you have to pull the capsules off and dry them in a bag for a few weeks, then split them open and sow in a tray or pot very thinly. There may be a couple of hundred in each capsule. They need the warmth of a greenhouse for 18 months or so to get them going and before planting outside.
The seed capsules can stay on the plant for decades but will drop off after a fire although I have never known Callistemon seeds germinate outside in the UK.

Semi ripe cuttings are easy although I do mine in a mix of sand and medium vemiculite.

My first one to flower is C Pallidus which pale yellow and is just opening.
The showiest red C Citrinus Splendens just pulled through the winter but so far has no buds whereas C Mauve Mist is covered in them.

Beware, C Citrinus Splendens is one of the least hardy varieties available, even here some have been badly affected by the last cold winters.

PM me if you would like some pink, orange/green and yellow Callistemon seeds.
