I have recently moved and in the garden there is a row of boxwood, just wondering how old do they have to be before you can start shaping them?

You can trim Box about now without any problem , we always do and they always look fine and then again about Sept.We have a couple of big ones but sadly one has succumbed to Box Blight so for now we've cut it right back, but will more than likely dig it up and plant something different, but not in the same place.

Did you plant them?, if not do you know how old they are . I know by their size it could be thought they are young ( and they may well be) but my parents grew them in their garden as a low divider and kept them around the size of yours and they looked great. I don't think age really matters, more important to do it at the right time of year.

Interesting fact boxwood is very hard and the famous engraver Thomas Bewick used the endgrain of boxwood for his engravings because it would take the detail he wanted.
