That's truly horrible. In fact 'horrible', or any other word in the English language, just doesn't come close.

That poor kid. What an ordeal. And his poor family.

The kid is lucky to be alive. Apart from the inevitable blood loss and shock, he must have been thrown with quite a lot of force in order to pull his arm off.

I hope trading standards figure out how the kid managed to open the door when it was on the spin. For almost as long as I can remember washing machines have had a safety lock so it should have been impossible to open the door in the first place while it was on, and they usually have a second failsafe that immediately cuts the power if the door is somehow opened. It seems that both those safeguards failed, and I'm sure that is a worry for anyone with young kids in the house.

Did I read that the machine was rented and also that it has not been sold since 2000?

So why rent something that old?

Was probably only worth £15 second hand.

Yes Pete it was rented, Why did they rent something that old ???.
Because some Unscrupulous Low Morale creep,Didn't give a jot as long as he or she was collecting cash for the unsafe equipment they were renting out, in general to people who cannot afford to purchase goods. and the sooner they get their comeuppance the better..

There are always two sides to a story.

I used to work for a very well known white goods company, it was not unusual for a customer to "temporarily fix something" because they wanted the appliance working there and then. Needless to say what they did was dangerous.
So until "the other side of the coin is shown" its unfair to call someone "Unscrupulous Low Morale creep"

How is the owner of anything supposed to know it has a problem unless some one calls and tells them its not working?

        "Example in case"

Family, washing machine not working. wont start.

Some "bright spark" does something to "make it work" Little do they know what they have done is dangerous, the answer is usually "well it works doesn't it!

Tell me, how is that the fault of as you put it "some Unscrupulous Low Morale creep"

To be fair, there are always two sides to every story.

On one hand, it is possible that the lass or her friends 'fixed' the washing machine, and made it unsafe.

On the other hand, the machine in question hasn't been sold new since about 2000, that's 11 years ago. It would be perfectly understandable for a washing machine that old to have been 'serviced' once or twice to keep it working. Washing machines don't typically last that long unless they're held together with chewing gum and string so to speak.

We shouldn't pass judgement without access to the facts, but this is a very emotive story that will inevitably evoke some strong emotional responses.

I have to admit, my second response to the story was to conclude that the washing machine rental people were guilty, but given that my first response was to think of how I would feel if it was my son it happened to, when I reached that conclusion I was hardly thinking objectively.

Old Lady living on her own with no family rented a washing machine. The rental agreement was virtually signed up on her doorstep by a cold caller.
The old lady had the machine for @8yrs, paying her weekly rental. she had the machine repaired several times during the 8 yrs by the company.
On @ the 8th year an eng/rep called to do a repair,he offered her a deal.

"As you have been such a good customer over the years ,i have been asked to do the repair and offer you the machine for sale".
Good God she had paid enough money to purchase umpteen machines over the years.. fortunately my wife was her home help.:wallbang:.

In the case of the poor wee laddie losing his arm- The Creda 800 washing machine was removed by Trading Standards Officials. we wait for the outcome.
