Next year it is my intention to grow a small quantity of Sprouting Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts for each season - Autumn, Winter and Spring. I would be interested to hear suggestions on which varieties are best for each season. TIA

I had really good results with Bedford Fillbasket (Sprouts) last year, and this year's plants are really big. I picked them right through the winter, so they kept well [on the plant]

Here's what I grow for a succession of sprouts -
    Peer Gynt (Sept-Nov)
    Brigitte (Oct - Dec)
    Green Marble ((Nov- Feb)
    Trafalgar (Dec-Feb)
I just grow three of each and we usually have sprouts ready for harvest from Late September into March.
Last year however was a total disaster due to club root and I lost nearly all of my plants, but managed to salvage enough for a couple of pickings at Christmas time. This year the plants are looking very healthy.

What about cabbage root fly, I have discovered that broccoli, aut cauli's, savoys and ordinary cauli's planted about a month ago are all infected, decimated is the only word for it!

Most of the plants have wilted in todays strong sunshine, and I was able to pull them out off the ground.
No roots, just stems and the white maggots on the stems!

Oh! well, another trial and tribulation to overcome.
    Who would be a gardener?

    No cheers this time!

I plant through membrane or perforated plastic sheet and also cover with enviromesh. No probs with root fly or other bugs.

Hi Dave. You mentioned Peer Gynt, where'd you get those ? I've looked myself previously, and have only managed to find a bulk supplier.
    Cheers...freddy.

Hi Freddy. I'm sorry but I can't find a packet of Peer Gynt, I suspect I finished it and binned it. I've also looked through my notes and receipts and can't find anything other than the fact that the year before last I harvested the first on 8th Oct and last on 6th Dec.
I suspect I may have picked up the packet in one of the local garden centers.

    Sorry!

Thanks for the replies so far. I just did a search for Peer Gynt and whilst some of the regular suppliers claim to have them it appears that the Dutch company who "own" the variety have stopped supplyng. T & M are suggesting Nelson F1 hybrid as an alternative.
