Sadly you can't spray them, don't know,if there is a safe spray for edible plants on market now...I'm out of touch...Maybe ask in a Garden Center...as if they knew lol...Earlier this year, I called on our local G.C. asked the 2 owners for a Systemic...both looked each other, asking...what's that ?
I let 2 Bantam in my mini allotment now and again...they find the culprits fast and the rest of my plants get visited regularly by them too...they don't scratch plants up or eat leaves....like the chickens do...Some years ago I was planting little trees and saplings in chicken paddock, next day, most were dug up by them and they enjoyed preening their Feathers in the holes, being soft newly dug soil, looking for worms of course too. lol.

Hi Neil, you have a few options, one is spray
with Derris, spend time picking off the caterpillers or if you have children, offer them
a penny each for every caterpiller they put into
an old can, then you pour boiling water onto the caterpillers. Or finally make up a garlic spray and confuse the cabbage white butterflies.
    Regards LesH
