Buy one with a good strong motor or it will be knackered in no time.
Also, one with a programmer so you can set start time.
A retractable paddle is handy too.

Only one tip really - buy a Panasonic.

Before we bought ours, we did some fairly extensive research, and it quickly became apparent that the cheaper ones were a complete waste as they didn't really work as well and would end up shoved in a corner unused.

We narrowed it down to two in the end, a Kenwood and a Panasonic, but plumped for the Panasonic due to the reviews it got and advice on forums - and we definitely made the right choice.

The recipes that come with it are pretty good, but there are also plenty of recipes online and also books for pastries, doughs and cakes etc - very handy for making your own pizza dough for example.

        Good luck :)

EDIT - This one is a bargain! - the same one from Amazon is a kick in the pants off £100.

They are one of the most common things being given away on Freecycle, that always makes me suspicious.

(Didn't like to name names as I believe in freedom of choice. ;) )

A lot of people buy them thinking they will use them every day, and expect to be turning out the cotton wool that you buy in the shops - when they realise that they need to spend five minutes putting the ingredients in, and then they get a nice crusty loaf, they lose heart, and don't bother to look out any decent recipes.

That, and the fact that with most of them, you can't wash the bowl in the dishwasher.... people are just lazy.

That is the one I've got.

I'm afraid I am the complete opposite - if I've bought something that is good, or had good service, I am more than happy to name names and pass on the goodwill

I have a Panasonic SD-254. I have not bought shop bread for 6 years now. I would also recommend Panasonic above all other. Versatile, reliable and makes the lightest loaf of them all.

Thanks everyone. It looks like a Panasonic is the way to go then. :dbgrtmb: There's only the two of us at home now and we're both fed up with 'plastic' bread. There's not a decent baker on the island either, so making it at home is probably the best way. :)

Ziggy, a lot of people thought they were (excuse the pun) the best thing since sliced bread when they first appeared and I think they had the impression they could mass produce for their own families. I don't think they were aware of the time and effort needed to produce the bread, which is why there's a lot on freecycle. :)

I can understand that Loli. :) There's nothing like the smell of newly baked bread, coffee and fried onions as well. :wub2:
