We went up to Bremerhaven on the coast yesterday and I thought that yall might like to see a bit of what it is like up here.

The day started off dull but it turned out nice later on. This is where one of the car ferries used to cross the River Weser, but it is not used any more as there is a tunnel under the river now.

This is the Hochzeitsm¼hle / Wedding Windmill, a popular place to celebrate.

    The Fischereihafen / Fisherman's Wharf -

This is a tourist attraction but very nice, one fish restaurant after another, where you can sit outside to eat and watch the world go by, or at least the other tourists!

A very old delivery van on show -

You went under this covered walkway -

    - to the Fish Market, where you could buy both fresh and smoked fish. The smoke ovens are right across from the fish counter -

Just entering the Weser Tunnel on the way back home -

    - in the tunnel (didn't think this pic would turn out at all) -

We stopped in one of the villages -

    - to take some pics of an old fire station with hose tower building -

    - and isn't it typical that some idiot put the old shoes and clothes collection bins, etc, right next to it!

But there was an old farmhouse and some cows across the road to make it look countryfied again -

Gosh, I remember Bremerhaven well, Sis. Why have we got so much of yours and hubby's backsides, I ask? Hi, BIL (looking cool and casual) now facing me and Sis (with your bag of goodies). Nice one of each actually. [IMG]

Two uglies in one photo -

    - some more uglies just a bit further along. I couldn't get them all in one picture as we were driving and couldn't stop due to following traffic. This area is choc-full of these awful things, hundreds of them ruining the otherwise pretty countryside.

These next photos are taken in Dedesdorf, a pretty village -

    - an old house, now a museum -

    - an old restaurant & hotel, been here for years, very popular, called The King of Greece -

    - finally another old firestation, without a hose tower -

I've always loved the architecture there ... and you know we LOVE wind turbines ... to us they are graceful and do not detract from the scenery as do electricity pylons.

Thanks Sis, and if I could, I (and I think everyone else up here) would gladly send you all of the ugly wind turbines.

Thanks Hyla but can't have any overnight guests here at the moment, apart from the grandsons, as we are laminating the whole upstairs, getting rid of all the ancient carpets, so the place looks like a storage shed. However, it will be finished by next year when Dendy comes to visit.

Thanks for sharing your pictures with us, I have never been so it was really interesting. I love the museum.

And on the wind turbine debate, I like them

Thanks Dizi. I think one either hates or likes the "uglies", I don't know of any in-betweens.

Too true, I just think that I would rather see a million of these than one power station, I wonder if people used to have the same love/hate reaction to traditional windmills?

Interesting pictures Kedi, will get off my backside one day and visit Germany.

I have no real opinion either way as regards the wind turbines but I am a nimby when it comes to them.

Quick flashback to my school geography lessons.Was/is Bremerhaven a major factor in the German automobile industry, did cars get built there or were they just shipped out from there?

    Thanks Pip.

Cars are only shipped from Bremerhaven but built elsewhere, like in Wolfsburg, Stuttgart, Ingolstadt, etc. Years ago there used to be a passanger ferry went from there to England but it was discontinued a long while ago. Now just big ocean liners dock there.

I've really enjoyed this little tour. Not being the best traveller in the world means I don't get very far so it is great to see other people's travels. I loved the old delivery van but for me the best was the old telephone in the fish market. Next time you go, Kedi-Gato, could you rip it off the wall for me and send it?

And, I want to know who ordered that bl**dy great lobster?
