I can speak from experience of the motor trade and a customers experience in the design and manufacturing (of hi-tech, low volume production equipment) that more and more we are looking to EU immigrants simply because they are more capable. But I also accept your point about some of them in the building sector where many will have worked in the more eastern states for many years without any form of regulation or recognized training. The genuine ones are quite happy to take on UK accreditation processes but they seem only to make up about a third of the ones that I've met.

The major UK based manufacturer is Jaguar Land Rover who in 2016 accounted for almost one third of total UK production. 80% of all cars built in the UK are exported with about 55% of those going to the EU.
        So a fairly accurate generalisation of where the components for JLR (which applies to pretty much all UK manufactured cars with the exception of the Japanese brands) come from is as follows;
        Engines - the EU (Peugeot/Ford)
Gearboxes - EU, mainly Germany and France
Electronics - EU. Mostly Bosch or Seimens (German) with some French (Valeo) and Italian (Magnetti Marelli)
Fuel Systems - EU. Largely Bosch or Delphi (both German).
Braking systems - EU. ATE (German), Bendix (French), Valeo (French), Girling (UK) and Brembo (Italian)
Cooling systems - EU. Largely wrapped up by the French through Valeo.
Electronic consumers and motors - EU in roughly the following order; Bosch, Valeo, Magnetti Marelli and Lucas (UK)
Shock Absorbers - EU(Sachs and Bilstein ((Germany))) and increasingly China.
Tyres - largely EU (Germany, France, Italy and Sweden).

Basically, the average UK build value of every car built in the UK is just under 40%. So a no deal Brexit with tariffs at WTO levels would mean approximately an extra 10% on 60% of the vehicles value, give or take from model to model. Then add an extra 10% onto replacement parts.

OK I see your point about cars @longk, that we produce, and those from Europe.

What about all the ones that seem to be coming from the far east, I see more and more these days.
Not sure what percentage of those are built here though using EU parts.

But if the EU based ones go up in price those from outside will make a killing, to the detriment of the EU.

Turn right by the Post Office and the BREXIT Pub is on the left by the sign marked "EXIT", pete.

What I meant was if all the Dooms Day forecasts were right there would only be one car left in the UK after BREXIT because nobody would be able to afford them.:wallbanging::heehee:

Pity so many want to see Theresa May fail.....she is representing us after all ?? Pity we have so many petty, hypocritical and often ignorant politicians who put themselves ahead of the country. Pity then, because of this, the EU see us as fragmented, weak and shambolic and destined to fail

                    A good choice.

After we leave the EU we must ensure that whatever car(s) the UK produce are completely undesirable , otherwise the likes of BMW will buy them out and move the manufacturing plants abroad.

I owned one back in the nineties. It was so cool that someone offered me a Rover (P6) 3500 as a swap for it - the Trabby was a fashion thing, the P6 a bona fida classic so as much as I loved the Trabby I bit his hand off!

The advantage that the Europeans have is that they are 'self sufficient' in components.

I think we have been seen as fragmented , weak and shambolic in the past, ;), history maybe.
                        1939.
But I can remember only back in the 70s when the unions ran the country we were know as the "Sick Man of Europe", by the other countries of the EEC.

That's a problem for the EU - no deal Brexit - we set the tariff rates as we see fit - using WTO as the 'default' position. Buy UK first and then non EU - if we want to keep prices under control. Shock, horror - the EU are not the only suppliers out there :hate-shocked:.

I was quite pleased to see that Hunters and China are talking about a trade agreement - an agreement with the second largest economy - that we negotiate on our own behalf? - another shocker :hate-shocked:.

Sky T v were giving it Project Fear again today. Another one of their polls claims a big majority of people want to stay in Europe again.

Does anyone believe any polls or any of those pollsters anymore? Always wrong and most have got a secret agenda behind them. Who owns Sky Tv right now? Mr Murdoch, now he would have a hidden agenda to push right now would he?
