Is this a Brimstone Butterfly I saw today?...This pic doesn't do it justice as it's colour was amazingly bright.
Hi BM...I actually saw it fluttering across a field and go to ground,so I dashed and got my camera and luckily the blighter was still there! [ 21. February 2007, 08:36 PM: Message edited by: Paladin ]
I would think so.In the books I have they don't show the underwing but they do show the distinctive pointy bit on the fore wind that yours shows. One book also says that they are on the wing for a long period for a long time, starting in March- well spring is early.
I saw a pair of Red Admirals the other day Pal, the butterflies dont seem to have hibernated this year in the normal way. I guess the mild conditions keep waking them up.
I have lots of butterflies still, mostly Monarchs I think, but it's just so lovely to see them all the time.
Looks like a brimstone to me too! They are incredibly bright - and very cheering at this time of year (though this IS early!) I haven't seen any locally - though there were several to cheer us at Easter time on the Lancashire/Lake District border. Great picture!
