I have a huuuuge wall at the bottom of my garden, about 30ft high. For some time now I have been toying with the idea of growing a clematis montana up it.
I bought one on tues and today I got my brother round and we've attached some nails and twine to the wall for it to grow.
I can't wait to see it fly up that wall [IMG]

Good for you Daisybelle I for one love the monster that is called Montana and I'm pretty sure by next May you will have such a stunning display.....maybe not a bad one for this May either.

As Dee says pictures of your display for be lovely. Good Luck and remember plenty of twisting the runners around the wire once it has finished flowering as they grow like crazy, they are also very easy to take cuttings from.Hel.xxx.

    Hi daisy

If you are able to (don't know the size of the wall) you can make it a lot easier for the Montana to climb by putting chicken wire on the wall. You can hang it on the nails and tie it in place. As long as there is a gap between the wire and the wall the Montana loves climbing it [IMG]

I don't think I'd get my brother up those ladders again shiney!
And I'll twist what I can helofadigger, but I can only reach so far then it's on its own!
I will take a pic today then see how high it gets this year.

ooh another plant for an ebay purchase I think, I had been looking for a clematis to train up my shed, sounds like this is a nice fast growing one. Oh hang on I have just bought something for that, I'll have to find another spot for it!

Make sure it has plenty of room ellie. It is not only fast, it grows very big if allowed to.

Okay, I will try and train it along a fence I think - I am so excited I have so many plants on order the next couple of weeks - it's like Christmas - boy I hope we get some good weather so I can get them all in. Not sure where I'll find the time with my seedlings as well.

Ah well, another 7 months of no housework coming up [IMG]

Daisy, there is no way that twine is going to be strong enough to hold any climber, let alone a Montana. You need to use vine eyes and wire to give it the support it needs.

Well, that's the best it's going to get for now daitheplant, although thanks for the warning. The twine is very strong, we couldn't break it and the nails are big ones and they're knocked right in. It won't grow the full height this year will it, so we can review after that.
It certainly has enough room Sarraceniac-I am going now to do a picture...

Here's a picture. We have only put the support on a small area so far, but we can expand this as necessary.
