I planted some seeds on 14/2/07 which are now propogated. When would be best time to plant them out, and will they need supports / canes ?

I plan to put them either in same bed as runner beans or with peas. Which would be best ?

You should be able to put them out now, though it might be better to harden them off for a few days by putting them out during the day and bringing them in at night. They grow fairly tall so it would be best to provide some support by putting canes at the end of the row and running some lengths of twine down each side of the row up to a height of about 3 or 4 feet. You could start with a length at about 18 inches and add further runs as the plants grow.

I often plant a double row in the same trench row as peas as the width required is about the same.

If you can make successive sowings you'll avoid a sudden glut and extend the cropping season.

Hi oktarine,my book says transplant seedlings in March-April.
Longpod variety-Bunyard`s exhibition(white);not the biggest nor longest nor most delicious.Just a completely reliable old favourite-good yields, good flavour, good for freezing.
Pinch off the first 3in. of stem as soon as the first beans start to form. This will ensure an earlier harvest and also provide some degree of blackfly control. This serious pest must be kept down, so spray if attacks persist.
I think even dwarf peas will need some sort of support, string etc.I grew Kelvedon wonder last yr against a wire fence and they still needed suppurt to stop them falling forwards and nearly all Runner beans will grow 8 to 10ft high so if your gonna put them together you`ll have supports anyway. Thanks for your replies - so quick too !

I think I'll put them in with the peas - Kelvedon Wonder would you believe ! All we need now is a few drier days so I can get things going.

Trying hard to be patient, but have to admit I'm chomping at the bit.

    I'll post some pics soon.

Picture of my broad beans yesterday. They seem to be doing well, now about 8" tall.

Plants now about 2 foot tall, and in flower.
