Broad Beans

    When is the best time to pick the tops of the Broad Beans there are lots of flowers on the beans have :yho:attached photo.also small image Charlotte potatoes click on image to enlarge.[​IMG]es.

    I'm growing broads for the 1st time and my guru has said to me to keep an eye out for the black fly which are atracted to the flowers then pinch them out once the fly is spotted. Looks as if your growing Sutton's correct me if i'm wrong.

    :scratch: Well I usually pinch out the tops on mine when the first tiny bean pods appear on the lowest truss John, but Others may think differently.. I did find this on Gardeners World site..

    There was a recipe for using the bean tips in The Observer a few weeks ago, wilted with pasta and parmesan, sounded lovely!

    I was also under the impression that the time to pinch out is when at least some of the lowest flowers have turned to bean pods. I'm growing Suttons too, got loads of flowers but no pods yet.

    Yes Suttons i sprayed the beans Tuesday and i pinched the tops off today because a few other on the allotment have had black fly so dont take any chances.
