Is it worthwhile growing broccoli in pots of compost? Should I add a little lime to the pots? I plan to bury the pots in soil to reduce water loss.

    Thanks

Ooooh - is broccoli in pots not good. I have grown broccoli in modules and transplanted into slightly bigger tubs. Will put in raised beds in a few weeks time. Plant the pots??? Oooh - will track this thread - I have much to learn!

Why not just plant them in the soil? If anything you'll water less as pots can dry out very quickly. The pots will also constrict the roots - they get very big!

I grow broccoli in biodegradable pots and I don't experience any transplanting problems. I start the seeds in germinator and afterwards transfer the seedlings in cow pots, which are inserted directly in the garden or in larger container. Everyone can grow in the same way young sprouts that don't like to be transplanted.

Could I use empty loo roll holders? - trying to keep expenditure down.

Would this work for Butternut Squash as well?
