What kind of brocolli are you growing Snowbaby.
I'm only growing sprouting brocolli (purple and white) for harvesting late winter - early spring. They're looking good - about a foot high.

Last year I tried (memories gone here, it will come back) the more regular brocolli as it were. It was a complete disaster, it just bolted, so I didn't do any this year.
Do let us know how you get on as it might be worth me trying again.

Same as Alice, I only grow the winter types and they are about 12-18" high - starting to press up against the netting - will have to get some bigger nets soon.

I haven't got a clue what type as the seed packet got blown away soon after I planted *rolls eyes*

Mine are doing fab! The leaves are a bit over-running the planters, but all 6 broccoli plants have the broccoli heart now growing!! They've grown a fair bit since this photo was taken

I've got two varieties on the go. 'Green' something and 'Autumn' something if memory serves. (Green Magic? Autumn King? Could be)

Both going well. Sprayed with systemic bug killer to zap the pesky caterpillars.

Had first harvests off my earlier ones, and new cut n come again sideshoots are busy growing on them.

Inspect them well for batterpillars snowbaby, they are the same colour as the broccoli when cooked:euw:

I think what Snowbaby is growing are actually calabrese, and to reiterate Ziggy, my old father would never eat calabrese because "you could'n't see the catapillars"

I doubt caterpillars would get into the head of the broccoli, they eat the leaves but just in case I always give my veg a good soak in a bowl for 15 minutes to get rid of any bugs.

Sorry, Snowbaby, I did'n't mean to put you off. Dad would not eat it but I do. Just soak the heads in salt water before cooking and if any caterpillars are there they will escape. If you ate one by mistake you probably would'n't notice and I doubt that it would do any harm, aferall, many natives in rain forests live on them.

Well we ate the first broccoli last night, it had a much stronger "green veg" taste than shop bought ones. We liked it though! No pillars!! Woot!
