    Hello All

please be gentle, first post, and first tentative steps towards becoming a gardener

I have a new lawn laid, via turf, in April. I let it bed in for a while, then cut the top off a couple of times, then started to cut it down to amangemeble level.

I now cut it once a week onaverage. the problem i have is the base of the individual grass plants is bronw for about an inch, then the green leaf is growing out of the top of the brown base.

the lawn grows quickly, appears fairly thin, and i have mushrooms.

I also had an algea problem, i think called rust (?), which appears to have disapeared.

everytime i cut the grass it appears very brown until the shoots grow out of the top of the brown bits, until it is cut again, then back to the brown for 4 or 5 days.

Is there anything i can do?

    all help greatly appreciated

    Doc

It sounds like you need to gradually reduce the height of the lawn.

How many settings do you have on the lawn mower and what setting are you using?

If you cut it really short, rake up the grass cutting afterwards, and feed it at least once a week (better if you mow it more than that), and scatter sharp sand over the top every few weeks, the problem will gradually go away. My lawn was in a shocking state until I adopted this regime, now although not perfect, it is a massive improvement on what it was just a few months ago. The trouble is you need to keep on top of it. If you leave it a few weeks it will start to go back to how it was.

also you have to remember that not all turf is the same. At the two ends of the scale you have meadow turf which likes to be left long and golf green turf which wants cutting twice a day, then there are all the different types in between.
