I get this on my patio, the run off from some pots leaves brown stains. I think its due to the peat free compost as I never noticed it in the past. I bought some big plastic saucers to stop the stains. My hands go brown when using peat free too.

    What compost are you using?

I am using miracle grow premium all purpose compost, i am concerned that it may kill the plant, if the water is sitting in the tray at the bottom

That's the same compost as I used, I don't think it affects the plant in any bad way.

Thank goodness, it is a young plant and I want it to reach its full potential because when it flowers it is gorgeous

Wouldn't you be better using an ericacaous compost.

Not especially but I do think azaleas benefit from lime free compost.
If you have only just recently potted it it could be easy enough to change it, but if it's been in a while it might be best left alone for the time being and see how it goes.

I missed it was an azalea, they do need acidic compost which that Miraclegro isn't.
