    hi all

just been having a nose through and noticed in some of your greenhouse pics that you have some kind of bubble wrap pinned to the windows ,

can some tell me if it is bubble wrap and whats the reason for having it,

just bought a 6x6 and was wondering if to get some or not ?

    thanks all

    Insulation.

Often used for fighting frost with tender plants in the garden as well. But then you have to be careful with air circulation.

I've got a 6x6 and have bubble wrap half way round, then in winter I cover the rest except the roof, it's for insulation to keep your tenders warm.

Sorry cattwoman, my reply was too simplistic. It's not just insulation in winter but also filters too much direct sunlight in summer. Basically you want the sunshine and light but don't want leaf scorch. So it has a year round job.

I haven't actually got a greenhouse at the moment, until the spring. BUT I KNOW A MAN WHO HAS. Several actually.

They just use very sticky tape (try Wilko or similar) . Everything else is just the usual commercial rubbish (or so my local club mates tell me).

I used to have one and I used tape. You may have to replace it occasionally but then you also have to replace the bubble wrap as well every 2 or 3 years.

Why is just growing a few plants so expensive? [IMG]

    thanks sarraceniac

think i will just use some kind of tape

and as for growing a few plants :D i use to spend about £150 - £200 a year on compost, bedding plants, hanging baskets ect and thought good grief this costs a bomb

so decided to grow my own

    :D

first time was last yr 4 coldframes £100 endless bags of compost , forever buying seed trays & seeds then buying plant pots so that cost me about £200

so............this year.......... thinking i had everything and all i needed was compost and seeds WRONG !!! i go and buy another walkin coldframe a 6x6 greenhouse and decided to do some veg :D this year has cost me just under £500

and i still am ordering stuff for next yr

it does seem never ending but fingers crossed [IMG] i now have everything for next yr just need compost :D

I used aliplugs to put up the bubblewrap in our greenhouse. They were quite easy to use and have kept the bubbles in place so far! You can get it by mail order from Harrod Hortifcultural:

Found this thread ingenious in the simplicity of using bubblewrap to to protect from heat and cold. I don't have a greenhouse but my neighbour does.

I now work for a large supermarket chain and have spent the last week collecting bubblewrap from the the fresh fruit and veg deliveries so we can use it as suggested. I, obviously, have access to those areas in the store.

So, instead of buying it, chat nicely to the manager of your local shop and ask them to save you some bubblewrap from their deliveries.

Great idea T&O. As a Yorkie I am all in favour of anything that saves the pennies. Only trouble is that all my local traders are also Yorkies so would probably try to sell it if they thought it had a use. :( [IMG]

Staples the office supply store is a good place for huge rolls of bubble wrap it costs about £21.00 for a 60 metre roll that's stands about 2 or 3 foot high.
Maybe it's too much for the intended job but with the remaining bit you could have a bubbble wrap popping party! :D
