You can prune now. No idea about grafting them so I'll be watching this thread with interest.

Verdun is correct as always:thumbsup: :snork:, now is the time to prune a Buddliea back hard to the last three outward facing buds.

Grafting two varieties:ideaIPB: ???.......that should be interesting!!! I would have thought the traditional way of grafting roses would be applicable and Buddliea is so easy to grown from sticks, even when left for a year without planting in the ground!! It does make me wonder why it's not been a success with Commercial Growers though as I am sure they will have tried it over the decades. It might be to do with the different growing habits of each variety:scratch: :dunno: :snork: But anyway it sounds like a interesting project.:coffee:

Tell me more about growing it from sticks? I want a few of these in my garden and if I can liberate part of one growing in the wild rather buying them in a garden centre, that would be brilliant! :blue thumb:

Yvonne. Grab a cutting or two or three from those who are growing them. They really are easy peasy and so quick.

Do you just plant the sticks in a pot of compost?

Hi Yvonne, growing Buddliea from sticks is very easy. I'd heard about how people had used pruned Buddliea branches as supports for growing peas in veg plots a year after cutting them, only to find the Buddliea prunings starting to sprout and regrow. I used Buddliea pruning for other supports by sticking them in the ground and found I had a "forest" of Buddlieas. So a foot long pruning of this current year's new growth off a Buddliea will do the job. Just cut the prunings and stick them in the ground........that's it, they will grow!!!:snork:

I (hard) prune half the stems of my Buddleias in mid February, and the other half mid to late March. I think it prolongs the flowering period, but I may just be kidding myself!

If you look at old industrial buildings, Yvonne, that have been abandoned you will find lots of Buddlieas that have grown in cracks in the roads, brickwork and, if you look up, in the gutters and roofs. They're a very tough and hardy plant and given the chance will sprout just about anywhere.!!

Globosa is same genus but different species to Black Knight (which is davidii) but I dunno if that makes them likely to be incompatible for grafting, or not??
