    Hi Rosietu.
According to my Readers Digest Field guide to Butterflies and other Insects of Britain it is a Rose Chafer(Cetonia Aurata)

An attractive green beetle that flies from May to August.
They may be found on the petals of large flowers, particulaly roses,on which they feed.
    Length 20mm

I have no idea as to whether they are a pest.
Might be a good idea to try Google

    Good Luck

Its the rose-chafer's grubs that are a nuisance. They eat into root vegetables. The adult beetle is a beautiful metallic green and will just nibble small holes in flowers

The Rose is quite old Hornbeam bred 1927 just a few years older than me! full description on
Peter Beales website I would think the tub of chicken pelleted manure has contributed to the condition of the leaves, Tis a beauty no doubt,
I am waiting for the other four bushes to come into flower as this garden in Dorset is only 20 months old every thing is new. [IMG]
PS loved your blogspot may take that up myself.

I use pelleted chicken manure too. No smell and it really does a grand job. Mulch with garden compost in the autumn, two handfulls of pelleted chicken poo per bush in the spring and two more in the summer and that's it.
