    hi
does anyone have an estimate of how much it would cost in materials to build a 13x8 wooden shed, ive been quoted 800 pounds for a ready made one ,which i think is a bit to dear, there would be no need for a concrete base, as the floor is sound.
    any replies would be welcome

You really need to give some thought to the design of your shed e.g. a flat roof or a pitched roof, number of windows, size of door/s. Do a sketch plan to work out the wood required for the frame and cladding and then start looking around for sources of timber. You should be able to find firms in your locality that can supply reclaimed timber which is usually cheaper and often better quality than 'new'.
You'll also need to factor in the fastenings (nails/screws) and roof covering and transport costs.
Beware of 'bargains' in the internet - you get what you pay for. Our son bought one for a workshop and you could just about spit peas through it! £800 isn't too bad IF it's a really well built one, but you could probably do as well if not better with a DIY construction if you can source decent materials.

    hi dave
i didnt purchase one on the internet, they were local to me, and they are made of good quality, but i thought 800 pounds is a bit steep, and ,i would like a challenge of building my own shed, it would be so rewarding, what do you think about the price??

cymro - The price is probably pretty standard. However if it was me, I would have a close look at a commercial shed and make a note of all the lengths and sizes of the timbers that were used to make it. Then go to your local wood yard and get quotes for that type of wood and calculate the cost. It would be interesting to know the cost of the wood in an £800 shed.

My own feeling is that it may be like making a car out of spare parts. The cost of the parts, which you are buying retail, may be more than the cost of the whole car/shed, which was costed using materials at a wholesale price. Also if you buy a shed it will look quite good, having a door and a window that may be more difficult to make yourself. But it all depends on finding out the value of the wood in a shed.

Cymro I'm all for saving those very important pennies cheap or free doesn't mean poor and nasty, recycle items are the way to go, skip hop and genernally looking whats about...... ask first before you take things of course.:hehe:

Join Free-cycle on the web and see if anyones giving a shed away in your area ideal if your not very handy with the hammer and saw 'stuff' or if you are indeed even a little bit handy have a go at making one yourself again search Free-cycle for materials to build a cracking new one, by building your own you will get a far better shed.

The grand total cost for ours was just a lock and now Bob's got orders for more!:doh:Hel.xxx.
