This was started yesterday, built the bench first which was just glued and screwed using resin w glue. Thought about mortice and tenon joints, but due to re cycling the timber that is pretty old, I didn't want to weaken it.
Once the glue had dried on the bench I started on the clamp mechanism, just using what timber I had, used the plans dimensions which seem to be spot on, except the "anvil" that the wood rests on is a tad high and the method I've used isn't as adjustable. The whole clamp mechanism just slides off the end of the bench leaving it open for a cuppa for two. The "G" clamp just holds it all in place, I will have a go at making it more adjustable tomorrow. Total build time was around 3 hours without really rushing at it.

Thanks Zigs, it looks ok down the garden and I can play with the draw knife when I harvest the Ash and Sycamore that I have pollarded to make thumb and walking sticks from. I have some Red Deer antler, need to get up the hills and see if I can find some more in the next week or so.
I could perhaps do something similar for stick making if anyone is interested.

I like a lot of Ray Mears stuff, but like him I was more of a Les Hiddins "Bush Tucker Man" myself.
