    Time for 'another strange question from Siân'

    We are on our hols in Normandy, and keep seeing these strange short towers in the fields. Well, we've seen one or two, anyway.
    I've been trying to Google them, and haven't got anywhere. Does anyone know what they are? Some sort of grain store, perhaps?
    @noisette47 ?

        I have seen them here as windmills. Here is one I painted many years ago ...

            My first thought was windmill, but they are far too short. Only two storeys high, and a windmill really has to be at least 3 storeys, and above the orchard trees, in order to get the wind...
            To misquote Father Ted, the building next to the unknown round structure is far away!

            Another idea was dovecotes, but there’s no way for birds to get in or out...

            Oast house, a good thought, but no obvious ventilation?

            If we’re into misquotes...
            Ith’s a mythstewree, oh ith’s a mythsteree!

              I found this picture on the internet Sian. It's a dovecote in Northamptonshire. Perhaps the openings in the brick/stonework have been filled.

                  Thank you, @noisette47 !! You’re a star!
                  The neighbour of our gite comes into the garden most days to get food for his rabbits from the barn (leaving the gate to his garden open, even though he knows there’s a hunting dog here - what’s that about?!!). But I struggle to understand his french - and vice versa.....

                    Pfff don't get me started on the French and animals! :gaah:
                    Well, the consensus is that it's a pigeonnier or colombier. Perhaps the Normans don't let them free-range? :biggrin:
                    Bonnes vacances :) x

                      Thank you for asking for me :blue thumb:
                      Thanks for the info - I will have a good look at it tomorrow, rainstorms permitting, and see if I can see any openings for birds to go in and out of, at all....

                      Another suggestion, if you're in the area for a bit longer, is to ask at the local Mairie. The fount of all knowledge :)
