Has anybody any happy memories they would want to share with us all regarding Burns night

I have..... I spent one burns night in a place called Jesselton in Borneo. We were invited by the local flying club for the evening and all was very jolly with the scottish water flowing freely.
Then someone came up with the idea to offer us aircrew a joyride .. !
Well.. flying with a mad Scot.. nine tenths to the wind and at night in the Far East did not appeal.
Had quite a job convincing the guys that I had an early start with a Flight to the Phillipines...!!

I usually do something to celebrate Burns night, Capney - but I've never spent it in Borneo. Thank you for sharing the experience.
    |Sometimes I come away with a new flavour of the month - but this is a long standing favourite and I do like the Eddi Reader version.

    Hi Robert

I am Welsh, my grandfather on my mother's side Irish and on my father's side Scottish ... not sure there is any English anywhere ... :heehee:

I have a few memories ... a funny one when I had to bring t'other's half's boss home with us in his kilt and he crashed on our sofa and I had to cover him up ... and when we went to his and he 'piped in the haggis' .. and a young guy he was but true to his traditions.

Alice, what a beautiful, beautiful song ... I shall see about getting more as I was quite taken by her voice ... thank you so much for sharing that. xx

We shall probably go to the Kilt & Kelt in Albufeira for lunch on the 25th ... although haggis, neeps and tatties are on the menu every day of the week ... and excellent it is I can tell you ... :yahoo:

At a print shop where I once worked, someone gave us a hand written poem to put on a flyer for a Burn's night event that was happening locally. The poem was written in a kind of hybrid of fairly archaic English, and I'm told Scottish Gaelic. I can't explain how or why, but as I read it in preparation to type it up, I understood the whole thing, and I must confess it brought a tear to my eye.

I've never seen the poem again since, and can't remember the words, although I can remember the general gist of it. Maybe someone here might know its title. It speaks of ordinary folks going about their ordinary lives, while in the background there is a feud. Then one day in a wheat field one group was ambushed by the other and a bloody battle ensued. It then went on to speak of a horrific slaughter, all while the very people that could have came to their end were happily going about their business, just over the hill, unaware of the plight of their kin. The poem ended with a reference to haggis, and a promise that the day, would never be forgotten, and never again will their be such hostility among their kin.

Does any of that ring any bells? I'd love to read it again, if only to see if I've remembered it right.
