    Hi, more help needed for a novice here - I'd like to plant some sort of bush or other plant in my garden that will attract butterflies. Adds an air of tranquility and the kids' love 'em. Any suggestions?

    Golden Rod - looks weedy and long and lanky but bees and butterflies love it. : )

    Thanks everybody! I'll have to print this off and get to the garden centre next March or so with a list, although if you do that traditionally they'll have every plant except the one you've written done, I find. Cheers!

    Ok, I know this book is abit dated, 1995 'The BBC Gardeners World Directory' but;

    (trying to note ones that are more popular to recognise)
    Trees, shrubs and plants that attract bees and butterflies:

    Acer, Prunus, Salix, Berberis, Buddleia(hence being also called butterfly bush), Buxus, Ceanothus, Cornus, Fuchsia, Hebe, Lavandula(lavander), Potentilla(like a buttercup), Ribes, Spirea, Syringa(lilacs), Viburnum, Achillea, Aubrieta, Centaurea, Dianthus, Echinacea(coneflowers), Liatris, Phlox, Primula, Sedum, Thymus, Verbena.

    I hope you can make sense of this somewhat list I have done.

    Deserter, I would visit the garden center now - a lot of the suggested plants are perrennial and there are some great bargains to be had, that will give you a lot more next year - if planted now. :D
