Saw 4 Brimstones on this morning's dog walk, non settling and being blown around by the wind.

 

Didn't even realise Brimstones were about this early in the year, woodland walk was it @Scrungee?

We walked to a local NT property, through the grounds then back along along footpaths via where we normally take our dog, just under a 5 mile trip. Was rather hoping the mass of bulbs flowering in the grounds might attract some early butterflies as it's been 15 deg C here today. First local Brimstones sightings posted on Butterfly Conservation website were 4 days ago.

Being a NT member, I've re-booked for Thursday and Friday to try and get an image, if that fails will try again next week (not that I'm obsessive). Anybody who thinks photographing Brimstones isn't exercise has never spent a couple of hours chasing after them trying to catch them settled on a flower.

 

Better luck today. Popped out lunchtime for a quick walk along a local sheltered path where one side catches the sunshine and is a good place for butterflies to settle.

Saw 3 Brimstones and managed to get pictures of 2. Not any flowers for them to settle on.

 

First butterfly of the year spotted in my garden, a Small Tortoiseshell. Feeding on the Lonicera fragrantissima interestingly enough, haven't seen a single butterfly on that shrub before!

Thought Wednesday pm was going to be dry and warm so walked to my local NT property hoping for a butterfly on their flowers, but the sun went behind clouds and showers came.

But on the way home the sun came out and this Brimstone settled beside the track.

 

Didn't bother going out with a camera out this afternoon as it was so cold and windy this morning, but when Mrs Scrungee took Dog out she saw 6 Brimstones, 1 Peacock and 1 Comma. Went to the plot after she returned and saw 3 Small Tortoiseshells.

Tomorrow and Wednesday with higher temperatures, light winds and lots of sunshine forecast should be one of the best days so far this year for butterfly sightings.

 

Went out for a dog walk and saw 21 Brimstones, 8 Peacocks, 4 Commas, 2 Speckled Woods and 1 Small Tortoiseshell.

A real lack of flowers for them to settle on at the moment, but a Brimstone landed on one of the patches of Coltsfoot where our dog runs off lead and I managed to get a pic before he ran through them.

 

Now seen Brimstone, Orange Tip, Green-veined White, Red Admiral, Peacock, Small Tortoishell, Speckled Wood and Comma.

And at my plot this afternoon, a Small White that was dozy enough to let me get real close for a pic with phone

 

Male Orange tip on (white dammit) Bluebell. It was on a blue one in our daughter's garden when I went to get my camera and refused to shift, depriving me of a classic shot.

 

I've seen a few Orange Tips but none settled, yet!
