I'm hoping to redevelop a boring bit of my garden currently having stone chippings. I think I might go for laying lawn and looking at buying turf. I've never done this before and not sure who might be a good supplier. I've Googled and checked around quite a bit but honestly still none the wiser as regards who to buy from.

I think I'll need around 20 sq metres. No idea about what cost to expect either.

I'd thought of waiting till homebase or BandQ have them in stock and buy direct. Or get it delivered from an online company.

The thing is I can't get my head around how big 20 sq metres of turf will be. Like, would it be several trips in a hatchback? or a mountain?

    Yours in confusion,
    Fens

I believe that a standard turf is 9 feet long and 1 foot wide = 1 square yard.
    They then roll it up.

For weight, you can reckon on about 10 to 12 kg per square metre, so your total weight will be around 200 to 240 kg, which is getting on for quarter of a tonne.
When rolled up, each turf will be probably be about 2ft (60cm) wide and about 18 ins ( 45cm) in diameter.
You should be able to get 20 turves in the back of a decent sized hatchback with the back seats folded down, (remember to check the weight limit for your vehicle though).

Thanks all for the info, that puts things into perspective. Can only guess you were a bit merry from a wee dram before posting that Jack :WINK1:

Anyone know when usually the B&Q/Homebase/Wickes turfs are available? And is that turf reasonably good?

If I can find one I'll post a pic of the area I'm thinking of for the turf to see if anyone has some other better ideas before I go ahead.

    Again thanks.

    And HNY to all.

We have found that it is best to physically go and look at the turf before buying. We bought our turf from homebase last year, it is generally good turf, best to by it on a thursday / friday when they have it delivered for the weekend, but feel they may not start stocking it until maybe March/ April time.

    Hope this helps
