To keep the cabbage whites off I presume? Net them instead, much more eco friendly.

Hi freddy ,the netting is more of a mesh with i would say 5mm squares ,it covers them up well but i did notice a creature chomping on a leaf this morning, almost like a baby snail without the shell on.

Do you think a row of slug pellets would help to keep them off?though i don;t like using them because they look unsightly and the dead slugs look gross.

Hi Bob. Slug pellets work pretty well for me, so far I haven`t needed them, although I wont hesitate to use them. I`ve invested in `Enviromesh` to cover my brassicas. The mesh size is 1.35mm which hopefully will keep most pests out. Cheers...freddy.

Bob instead of using pellets use a liquid slug killer. You water it over your plants as well as the ground, You still have the corpses but not the pellets,:D

Liquid Derris is a reliable Cabbage White Caterpillar killer.

And It's Organic if that's important to you.

Best to prevent investation in the first place by using netting. The 'organic' v 'synthetic' thing is highly misleading. There are loads of organic compounds that are excellent for killing bugs and equally efficient for killing 'human beans' too. Tobacco used to be a freely available organic bug killer it worked very well, but.......!

    I totally agree.

I'm no Organic Crusader at all ,It's just that if you want to spray then I find Derris the best and it just happens to be "Organic".

I know "Organic" doesn't mean safe at all !!

My favourite Rant is about Bordeaux Mixture which is highly toxic but the "Organic Brigade" have taken this under their wing simply because the chemicals can be found naturally !!..

    Prevention first.

I made some triangular cloches from slate battens covered in 10 mm netting and this keeps the Cabbage white away.

Failing this then spray the blighters whit whatever you prefer.
