I set about clearing the vegetable patch yesterday, cleared out all the sweet corn, pumpkin and squash plants and had a general tidy up.
Sweet corn has done well this year and a decent crop of small pumpkins from my three 'Jack o' Lantern' plants.
This, however, is the sum total of my butternut squash crop, produced from six plants! :o

Suffice to say this has not been a good year for them in my garden!
So, what am I to do with this vast vegetable, this stupendous squash?
    All (clean) suggestions welcome. :D

You are not alone Trunky, grand total of 0 Nutterbutts this year.

Got some strange looking hybrids though.

Thanks Trunky:thumbsup:I have no idea what variety they were as we had to buy two new plants from our local garden centre as the three we grew from our Big Dig seeds wouldn't get a move on when we planted them out at the start of June after the last frosts. We set all of them out on the same piece of ground, yet the gc bought ones took off and never looked back and all five plants were treated exactly the same.:D

For some unknown reason ours didn't do much at all and only got two small squashes off of them, but as you can see we got so many off of those two plants:)

Mr Kandy has already used some of them to make Butternut Squash soup from a recipe he got off of Lorraine Pasquals{sp}television programme that is on each week and has also cooked some in the oven and had them as a vegetable with his evening meal one night in the week:D

Wait until you see the size of the carrots we pulled up this morning and the size of his Florence Fennel and Moulie Radish, they are rather largish:D

PS,will trawl through my photos to see if I can find some photos of the plants.I am sure I have some as I do get a bit obsessed with photographing everything:loll:

Hi Trunky,I have already told Mr Kandy that when he prepares the next Squashs for cooking to save me some of the seeds so when I have dried them off I can send you some, but as I have said the label just said Butternut Squash but the fruit looks identical to the Big Dig ones we grew last year, although last years were a bit bigger fruit.

I did hear on the radio last week that lots of people have not has a successful year with squashes as the weather went a bit colder in june so the plants didn't get the leaf growth on them like they normally would and just put on more root growth instead.I used home made lottie compost in the soil and after Mr Kandy had set out the plants he gave them a good dose of chicken pellets and i gavce them some more later on plus as much water as we could manage.

If you could remind me later on about the seeds as i am likely to forget :D
