    Hi guys

As you know I've recently cleared a whole heap of rubble etc from my garden. During this excavation I discovered this little gem. I'm pretty sure it's solid slate but I know idea what it's function was. Any ideas about what it was or what it could be?

The top surface is 7 1/2 inches by 10 1/2 inches. Here is another pic from the side. My first thought was the top of a post of some sort but it appears to have a mark on each corner is if something like a brass plate covered the top?

Is it not simply a plaque to mark someone's business premises?

the inscription is the under side of it? It could be Clueless but it's very heavy to be wall mounted, at least 10 pounds

Now you say that, it could well be. The hole could have been for a bell push?

Do you think it could have been a plinth with something mounted on top like this ?

very intriguing...is the apparent function of the screws (the 2 at the top plus the4 at the bottom) to hold the three parts together? (if they are indeed three...)

is the engraving on the larger section of the plate?
those two big screws were probably covered by two square stones or metal plates just to make it look nice, so thetefore that engraving would have been in sight.
