Calycanthus - Growing Advice

I'm trying to decide the best position to plant a Calycanthus. Some sources say full sun and protected from wind, another says avoid hot midday sun (highly unlikely to happen ). I'd welcome any advice please.

 

Mine's in shade (obligatory here) but shelter is equally important The leaves are quite soft and so susceptible to both wind and sun burn.

I've only got a species C. occidentalis, it grows anywhere, in my garden,even full sun, but I think it probably naturally grows under light shade of trees.

 

It flowers One of those shrubs that you cosset and eagerly await each year without it in any way being spectacular. Perhaps when it's got bigger it will make more impact.

I like a challenge, it’s got two years to prove itself .

 

I grew my plants from seed a long time ago, they get hacked back occasionally, but still flower on the new wood.

I think it might depend on which species the hybrid is created from? as mine just grow into a massive shrubs if not controlled.

 

I had one once. The flowers are a pretty shape but small and subdued in colour. So it didn't make much impact.

 

It kind of fits in my wild garden.

 

The one I’ve ordered is C. raulstonii Hartlage Wine which I’ve been considering for a while. It’s supposedly quite rare but I’ve seen it offered by several online suppliers . My garden needs a wild side @pete .

 

I probably should try one, not likely to be as rampant as the ones I have.

I can see why its rare, its not cheap is it.

 

I found one at a good price, about 25% less than others were asking for a 3 litre pot and gave way to temptation .
