    Hi all

I have a pink flowering Camelia in my garden which needs a bit of tarting up.

Initially I was going to move it so it would be closer to the fence but someone suggested that it isn't likely to be transplanted very well. So I have decided to leave it where it is and make it part of my bed and plant under it.

    So here it is:

A neighbour of mine has some massive cameilias and she lobbed off all the bottom branches and left a kind of canopy at the top. I wouldn't mind doing this - do you think this would be ok seeing it's not leaning against anything?

Also can I prune/shape it now? Obviously stopped flowering now and has had a recent spate of new leaves.

    Thanks

Hi Shivy, a good question, and hopefully someone can answer this as I too have one that looks a bit ragged.

Thank you - would it be fatal to remove some of the lower branches?

    Thanks

If you want to turn the plant into a standard by taking the lower branches off, just make sure you have something to seal the wounds. Something like Arbrex.

As David said now is the time to prune it,don't remove any more than 25-30% of the branches use good sharp tools to give a clean cut, don't cut flush to the main stem just short so there is a small collar and there is no need to seal the cut the shrub or tree will naturally seal I have done a couple of camellias this way with no problems.

On second thoughts, I guess it would just look a mess.

Jings, I think it must just be me.
I would leave that Camelia alone and work the bed around it.
Water it well and look forward to a glorious display next year.
