hi there, there are quite a few of these plants in a cluster which seem to have appeared from nowhere in my dads front garden. between us we thought a type of cornflower? or perhaps periwinkle? if anyone could shed some light as to what they may be it would be very much appreciated by dad and myself.

Yes. I would second that. I wish they would self seed like that for me. I have to grow them from seed as a biennial.

i think youre both right, 2 years ago myself and my brother in law cleared out my dads greenhouse after he became too disabled to run it. what we did was to empty any trays, any compost or any spoil into the front and back gardens should there be anything that may grow (harsh i know). but thats how we dealt with it. its nice to think that he got hold of these seeds and nurtured them.

I'll third Lychnis coronaria (well, it's already been seconded!). I find it self-seeds quite freely, if you have free-draining soil.

      What is this?!

I bought seeds back from Fuerteventura approximately 13 years ago and have been growing it since. This year, for the first time, it has sprouted flowers! I have no idea what it is. The leaves are about about 3 to 4 feet long and about 2 - 3 inches wide from the base. The flowers have sprouted from an 8 foot purple shoot. Any suggestions as to what it may be are welcome! Thanks :o) whatisit.jpg
